¿Qué son los phrasal verbs?
Un phrasal verb (verbo frasal o verbo compuesto) es la combinación de un verbo + una partícula (una preposición o un adverbio como up, down, out, off, on, in, away). Juntos forman un significado nuevo que, muchas veces, no se deduce de las palabras por separado.
| Verbo solo | Phrasal verb | Cambio de significado |
|---|---|---|
| look (mirar) | look up | buscar (en un diccionario o internet) |
| give (dar) | give up | rendirse, abandonar |
| get (obtener) | get up | levantarse |
| turn (girar) | turn off | apagar |
| take (tomar) | take off | quitarse (ropa) / despegar |
1. Intransitivos (no llevan objeto)
No necesitan un objeto directo, y la partícula nunca se separa:
- I woke up at six.
- She showed up late.
- Please sit down.
- The plane took off at noon.
2. Transitivos separables (se pueden separar)
Llevan objeto, y este puede ir en medio o después de la partícula:
- Please turn off the TV.
- Please turn the TV off.
Regla de oro: si el objeto es un pronombre (it, them, him, her, me, us), siempre va en medio:
- ✅ Please turn it off.
- ❌ Please turn off it.
3. Transitivos inseparables (no se pueden separar)
El objeto siempre va después de la partícula, incluso si es un pronombre:
- ✅ I look after my sister. / I look after her.
- ❌ I look my sister after.
| Tipo | Se separa | Ejemplo con pronombre |
|---|---|---|
| Intransitivo | No lleva objeto | She woke up. |
| Transitivo separable | Sí (pronombre en medio) | Turn it off. |
| Transitivo inseparable | No | Look after her. |

Phrasal verbs de tres palabras
Algunos phrasal verbs llevan verbo + dos partículas. Son inseparables y muy comunes:
| Phrasal verb | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| look forward to | esperar con ganas | I look forward to meeting you. |
| get along with | llevarse bien con | She gets along with everyone. |
| run out of | quedarse sin | We ran out of time. |
| put up with | soportar | I can’t put up with his rudeness. |
| come up with | ocurrírsele, idear | She came up with a great idea. |
| catch up with | alcanzar, ponerse al día con | I need to catch up with my work. |
| look out for | estar atento a, cuidarse de | Look out for cars when you cross. |
| get away with | salirse con la suya | He got away with the mistake. |
⚠️ Cuidado con look forward to: el to aquí es una preposición, por lo que después va un sustantivo o un verbo en -ing:
- ❌ I look forward to see you.
- ✅ I look forward to seeing you.
El significado de las partículas: up, down, out, off, on
Aunque cada phrasal verb es distinto, las partículas suelen repetir ciertas ideas. Con esto puedes intuir el significado de muchos que nunca has visto:
| Partícula | Idea frecuente | Ejemplos |
|---|---|---|
| up | aumento, terminar algo por completo, levantar | wake up, cheer up, eat up, speed up, clean up |
| down | disminución, calma, caer, detener | slow down, calm down, sit down, turn down, break down |
| out | salir, desaparecer, agotar, resolver | go out, run out, work out, find out, figure out |
| off | separar, partir, apagar, terminar | take off, turn off, set off, call off, put off |
| on | continuar, encender, ponerse | carry on, turn on, put on, keep on, go on |
| back | volver, devolver | come back, call back, give back, go back |
| away | alejarse, desaparecer | throw away, run away, go away, put away |
No es una regla perfecta, pero te ayuda a deducir significados: speed up (aumentar la velocidad) vs. slow down (reducir la velocidad).
Phrasal verbs vs. verbos formales
Los phrasal verbs son más naturales en conversación. Los verbos de origen latino suenan más formales y se usan más en textos escritos y entornos profesionales.
| Informal (phrasal verb) | Formal (verbo único) |
|---|---|
| find out | discover |
| put off | postpone |
| call off | cancel |
| carry on | continue |
| look into | investigate |
| get in | enter |
| set up | establish |
| turn down | reject |
- Conversación: We had to call off the meeting.
- Correo formal: We regret to inform you that the meeting has been cancelled.
7 errores comunes
1. Traducir palabra por palabra
- ❌ Give up = «dar arriba» ✅ Give up = rendirse
2. Poner el pronombre después de la partícula en los separables
- ❌ Turn off it. ✅ Turn it off.
3. Separar los inseparables
- ❌ I look my kids after. ✅ I look after my kids.
4. Confundir look at, look for, look after y look up
- look at = mirar: Look at this photo.
- look for = buscar: I’m looking for my phone.
- look after = cuidar: She looks after her grandmother.
- look up = buscar (en una fuente): Look up the word.
5. Usar get on / get off con un auto
- ❌ Get on the car. ✅ Get in the car. / Get on the bus.
6. Usar un verbo después de «look forward to» sin -ing
- ❌ I look forward to meet you. ✅ I look forward to meeting you.
7. Omitir la partícula
- ❌ I woke at 6 and got. ✅ I woke up at 6 and got up.
6 trucos para memorizarlos
1. Aprende por categorías
No memorices una lista alfabética de 100 phrasal verbs. Estudia 5 o 6 por tema (rutina, viajes, trabajo) y úsalos en frases de tu vida.
2. Aprende por verbo base
Los verbos que más phrasal verbs forman son get, take, put, turn, look, go, come y give. Estudia todos los de un solo verbo juntos: get up, get on, get off, get over, get along with.
3. Escribe tus propias frases
En vez de copiar «give up = rendirse», escribe: «I never give up on my goals.» El cerebro recuerda mejor lo personal.
4. Usa imágenes
Dibuja o imagina la acción: una persona standing up (parada), un avión taking off (despegando), una luz turning off (apagándose).

Si lleva objeto y puedes decir «turn the light off», es separable.
Entre los más comunes están get up, go out, come back, look for, find out, give up, turn on, turn off, take off, put on, pick up, wake up, sit down y look forward to.
